Community-Based Art Projects for Sustainable Urban Development: Empowering Marginalized Communities
Abstract
This paper investigates the role of community-based art projects in promoting sustainable urban development and empowering marginalized communities. In rapidly urbanizing environments, marginalized populations often face social, economic, and environmental challenges that exacerbate inequality and marginalization. Through a comprehensive review of literature and analysis of case studies, this study explores how community-based art projects address these challenges by fostering social cohesion, promoting civic engagement, and revitalizing urban spaces. It examines the collaborative processes through which artists, community members, and local stakeholders co-create artworks that reflect community narratives, identities, and aspirations. The paper also discusses the transformative potential of participatory art-making in empowering marginalized groups to reclaim public spaces, advocate for their rights, and influence urban planning decisions. Additionally, it highlights the role of art projects in promoting environmental sustainability, such as through the repurposing of abandoned spaces, the integration of green infrastructure, and the promotion of eco-friendly practices. The findings suggest that community-based art projects serve as catalysts for positive social change, enabling communities to envision and co-create more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable urban environments.
